'Shop Direct' & 'Buy For Me' Signal New Direction for Amazon

Amazon has taken another significant step in expanding its role in ecommerce, not just as a marketplace, but as a shopping layer across the entire internet.
With the introduction of Shop Direct and Buy for Me, it is starting to move beyond being a destination where people shop, and closer to becoming the interface through which shopping happens.
Shop Direct expands Amazon’s product search beyond its own platform. When customers search, they are now shown not only products sold on Amazon, but also items available on brand websites and other retailers. Amazon aggregates this through external product feeds and decides which products to surface and how they are presented. Where multiple sellers exist, it can combine the best available data to create a single, optimised listing.
Buy for Me builds on this by enabling Amazon to act as a purchasing agent. For eligible products, it can go to an external site, use the customer’s saved details, and complete the purchase on their behalf. From the user’s perspective, the experience remains within Amazon, even if the transaction happens elsewhere.
Together, these capabilities signal a clear shift. Amazon is positioning itself not just as a place to shop, but as the interface through which shopping decisions are made and executed. Effectively aiming to own the moment between customer intent and purchase.
For brands, this raises important considerations. As Amazon surfaces offers from across the web, brand protection and distribution control become more critical. The platform will determine which sellers and product versions appear, increasing the risk of unauthorised or inconsistent listings gaining visibility.
At the same time, product data becomes a key competitive factor. As Amazon ingests and reconstructs product information from multiple sources, brands with accurate, complete and consistent data will be better positioned to influence how their products are represented.
More broadly, this development shifts the nature of the customer relationship. Even when transactions occur off Amazon, the platform may still control discovery, decision-making and execution. As a result, the focus for brands moves beyond where they sell, to how they show up within the systems that increasingly shape what gets bought.
