Walmart Goes Live on ChatGPT

Walmart’s has announced a partnership with OpenAI which could start a transformation in how consumer's shop online. The collaboration enables customers to shop for Walmart products directly inside ChatGPT, using OpenAI’s new Instant Checkout feature. Whether planning meals or restocking essentials, shoppers can simply type or speak to ChatGPT, receive curated product suggestions, and complete purchases without leaving the chat. This integration, dubbed “agentic commerce,” allows AI to anticipate consumers’ needs — learning, planning, and predicting their preferences to create frictionless shopping experiences. Walmart’s in-house assistant, Sparky, will complement ChatGPT by extending this technology across its own apps and stores. For Walmart, this is about staying ahead of shifting shopping habits as conversational interfaces replace traditional search bars and websites.

The partnership brings substantial benefits. It broadens Walmart’s reach to ChatGPT’s 700 million users, boosts convenience for time-strapped customers, and strengthens efficiency. Internally, Walmart expects shorter product development cycles, faster customer support, and a deeper understanding of shopper behaviour.

However, there are clear risks. Data-sharing between Walmart and OpenAI raises privacy and regulatory concerns, particularly around consumer data use and antitrust scrutiny. Dependence on a third-party AI model also exposes Walmart to potential reputational damage if ChatGPT delivers misleading recommendations or technical errors. Furthermore, by passing ownership of the consumer to ChatGPT this could reduce the retailers' buying power.

For other retailers, the Walmart–OpenAI partnership serves as both an inspiration and a warning. Embracing AI-driven commerce could future-proof businesses and enhance personalization, but success hinges on balancing innovation with trust and transparency. In the emerging world of conversational retail, partnerships like this are likely inevitable — yet not all brands are ready for the trade-offs they bring.
