Amazon US Expands into Healthcare Category
Amazon has expanded its healthcare ambitions with the launch of a new AI powered Health AI assistant, currently available in the US via its One Medical service it’s being rolled out free to Amazon Prime members. The tool can answer health questions, interpret medical records, manage prescriptions and book appointments, effectively acting as a 24/7 front door to healthcare.
For brands, this is less about healthcare itself and more about how Amazon continues to close the gap between discovery, decision and action. Health AI doesn’t just provide information, it actively moves users toward a next step whether that’s buying flu medicine or booking or engaging with a service. There’s also a clear strategic play here, positioning Amazon as the go-to destination for both health advice and the products that follow, from symptom to solution, all within one ecosystem. The fact it’s bundled into Prime reinforces how Amazon can drive adoption at scale, accelerating behavioural change much faster than a standalone product ever could.
The implication is significant. If customers increasingly rely on AI to interpret needs and recommend outcomes, traditional levers like keyword optimisation and even product detail pages become less influential. Instead, structured data, relevance signals and brand credibility will determine whether your product or service is surfaced or not.
Most of Amazon’s Health related releases have been US centric for now. It’s unclear whether this would ever come to Europe – given the difference in the health care systems. However, strategically, brands should view this as a preview of how Amazon’s whole proposition is evolving to AI agent led. As we discussed at our recent event ‘The Rise of the AI Shopper’ the question becomes: is your brand optimised for humans browsing, or for AI agents deciding? Those that start thinking about content, data and positioning through that lens now will be far better placed as Amazon continues to shift from marketplace to decision engine.
